August 4, 2010--Harvest is officially complete in Kansas.  Samples from our cooperating elevators continue to arrive.  We have collected 125 samples of Hard Red Winter wheat from across Kansas.  The table below is the current data available for our survey.  The quality of this year's crop is outstanding.

We have just started the final phase of quality testing which is the analysis of area composite samples for milling yield, farinograph, alveograph, mixograph and tests to measure the dough characteristics.  These results should begin to become available in a couple of weeks.

Please review our current contour and production area maps for additional data.

The hard white wheat crop this year is also very high quality.  The results below represent just a a few samples, but were sourced from a large portion of the hard white wheat production area.

July 16, 2010--Harvest is winding down in our area. Test weights have all been good at 61# to 65#. We've had a couple of hot days this week and the grain moisture dropped quickly from 13 to 14 down to the 9 to 11 range. Proteins in the area have ranged from 10 to 13 with the average about 11.5 Most yields seem to be in the 40-70 range with some higher. Overall it has been a good harvest with good quality wheat.

-- Mike Brown, wheat producer, Colby, Kansas

July 10, 2010--We were finally able to get back into the fields yesterday around 4:00. We had to cut around a lot of areas because the ground was too wet. Grain moisture was 14%. Test weights were 61 to 62 pounds. Protein was in the 11's. Still haven't gotten a complete field harvested yet but yields appear to be around 60 bushels per acre.

--Mike Brown, Colby, Kansas

July 8, 2010--We really haven’t started harvest yet. Some early wheat was cut before the big rain last weekend, but that moisture and continued cloudy and cool conditions have halted harvest in northwest Kansas. We had around 1.5-2.50” of rain last weekend, and have had some additional showers in the past few days. The wheat looks fabulous—the best I’ve ever seen. Yields should be 70+ almost everywhere, if we can get it out without much more weather delays.

--Brian Linin, wheat producer, Goodland, Kansas

July 8, 2010--We have been stalled out over the last few days because of rain. People started getting back into the fields late yesterday. Currently we are about 60% done, with most producers saying they need another 2 to 3 days to wrap up everything. Our wheat has been averaging 65 bu/acre, test weight 62, and protein of 12.5. It is great looking wheat!

David Schemm, wheat producer, Sharon Springs, Kansas

July 7, 2010--Our 2010 wheat harvest ended on June 24th here in Sumner County. Most yields were a little disappointing because of the delay in planting last fall, however quality was very good with test weights over 60 lbs. and protein levels at 12+%. Earlier planted fields typically averaged 10 to 15 bushels per acre more than the late planted ones. Our local elevator (Conway Springs Coop) took in 3.8 million bushels of wheat which is less than average because of fewer acres and lower yields in their trade area.

Scott Van Allen, wheat producer, Clearwater, Kansas

July 7, 2010-- Harvest has slowed down in the northwest corner of Kansas due to rain showers, however we have additional wheat quality data available:

Class % complete Protein Moisture Grade TW (lbs/bu) TW (kgs/hL) Dkg DEF SHBN
HRW 46% 12.4 11.2 1 60.9 80.1 0.60 1.0 0.72
HDWH 37% 11.7 11.1 1 62.7 82.0 0.63 0.95 1.15

July 5, 2010--"We had a shower come in yesterday morning with cloudy weather all day and high humidity so we weren’t able to cut. Then we had between 2” to 3-1/2” of rain last night. Harvest is on hold for a few days."

Mike Brown, wheat producer, Colby, Kansas

July 4, 2010--"We got started harvesting yesterday afternoon.  Moisture running around 13%, test weights 62 lbs, and protein 11.5.  Don't have enough (wheat) cut to get an accurate yield but looks to be about 50 bushels per acre.  The next field we are planning on going to was still about 18% moisture yesterday, so I don't know if we will have anything ready to cut when we get this field done."

Mike Brown, wheat producer, Colby, Kansasuly 2, 2010--  Testing continues with our updated map reflecting the results of more than one third of the samples we are expecting to recieve. Our survey continues to show protein levels over 12% although many other sources and surveys are reporting protein levels between 11.5 and 12%.  Test weight continues to remain good averaging well over 60 lbs per bushel.

July 1, 2010--  With approximately 25% of the sampling completed, we have favorable results with the average protein content in south central and south west region of Kansas slightly above average, near 12% protein at 12% moisture basis. It is expected that protein content may fall a little as the harvest moves north and acre yields improve.

Test weight has remained very good as near ideal harvest conditions prevailed throughout the entire state this week. With the Fourth of July weekend forecast remaining favorable for harvest the expectation is for test weights to remain above 60 as an average.

Preliminary maps illustrating the harvest progress and the quality attributes of moisture, test weight and protein are available at http://grsc.gis.ksu.edu/HRW2010/

These maps will be updated regularly as harvest progress, minimum twice a week.

June 28, 2010--Harvest is nearly complete with only mud holes to be finished. Our good fortune was an uneventful harvest, that is, without any major breakdowns, although we did have to stop one time to repair a broken sickle. I haven't tallied up all the acres and yields yet, but the yields ranged from the 30's to 50 bushels per acre. Fields that were double cropped after soybeans in the fall were planted late and came in with the lower side of the yield range. Ironically, however, my best yield on my farm was on double cropped land that was planted before the rains made other land too wet to plant until early November. The variety planted on that field was 2137. There was very little disease pressure in that field. Looking back when the Wheat Quality Tour group made their stop at my farm, this field was projected to come in at around 45 bushels per acre, give or take a few tenths of a bushel.

--Paul Penner, wheat producer, Hillsboro, KS

June 28, 2010--We will probably start harvest toward the end of the week. We saw machines cutting as far west as Grinnell.

--Mike Brown, wheat producer, Colby, Kansas

June 27, 2010--There are combines running in Scott and Lane Counties and have been for several days.
I have been trying to cut in Scott County since Wednesday but my moisture was too high (16.9).
The combines were moved to Finney County and we were finally able to start cutting late Friday afternoon.
The moisture is running between 11 and 12 with test weights 62 and 63. The 158 acre field I cut yesterday made 62.5 bushels per acre--no protein available.

--Ron Suppes, wheat producer, Dighton, Kansas

June 25, 2010--Harvest in Kansas is past the halfway point with most elevators in the southern part of the state nearing completion and the northern producers going full speed ahead. Harvest conditions for the weekend are forecast to be ideal. Hot and Sunny. With 46 of the anticipated 183 samples collected, protein is averaging a very good 12.3 with test weight averaging 60.9 lbs/bushel (80 kgs/hL)

--Mark Fowler, associated director, International Grains Program

June 25, 2010--There are a few combines that are trying to cut in our area, we tried it today and it tested 17 moisture, so we still a have a few days to wait.

--David Schemm, wheat producer, Sharon Springs, Kansas

June 22, 2010--My wheat, as well as pretty-much all the wheat in this area, is the best I have ever seen! We have thick stands, the wheat has very large heads, and the kernels are plump and bountiful. I believe we will see some of the best quality high-yielding wheat from NW Kansas that we have ever seen.

--Brian Linin, wheat producer, Goodland, Kansas

June 21, 2010--Hot dry weather across southern and western Kansas accelerated the wheat harvest.  Harvest in many southern counties may be near complete by the end of the week. reports the official in Kiowa and Protection, Kansas.  Matt Overturf, Skyland Grain in Johnson KS reports harvest going full throttle with yields, test weight and protein at or slightly above average.  Samples received to date for our survey, Protein average is 11.85, Test weight average 61.5 with the grade average a US #1 HRW.

--Mark Fowler, associate director, IGP

June 19, 2010--Wheat harvest began in earnest three days ago.  Wet soils in the fields were the norm as we recently received 6 inches of rain earlier in the week.  We have had to cut around mud holes and plan to come back later to cut them out. Test weights have been ranging from 60 pounds per bushel to 61.6.  Very little bleaching has occured as the wheat was still ripening when the rain fell.  Yields range from 40 bushels per acre to 50 bushels per acre.  We are cutting wheat that was planted in late September and October of last year.  Diseases have not been a yield limiting factor in these fields.  However, we have observed a number of later planted fields that have visible signs of having had moderate infestations.

Of the varieties that show less disease, an old reliable from K-State's wheat breeding program, 2137 has done well.  I've not yet harvested my Santa Fe and Hitch varieties, so I await those results in a few days.

--Paul Penner, wheat producer, Hillsboro, Kansas

June 18, 2010--USDA reports Kansas wheat harvest is approximately 5% complete. After rain delayed harvest throughout Kansas, combines are now in the field across most of the state. Test weight reports are average to above average with most reports in the 60 to 62 lb. per bushel range (78-81 kg/hl). Protein is also average with most reports between 11.5% and 13%. If the weather remains sunny, this weekend will be a busy one for Kansas producers and elevators.

--Mark Fowler, associate director, International Grains Program

June 17, 2010--"Right now, it looks like we could have a very good wheat crop in this area. We had good rains early in the season that helped the wheat to move along. It looks like we will be starting harvest the last of June or first of July, about 4 days later than normal. We have had cool, wet season up until a couple of days ago, and now it looks like we will be going into a dry, hot spell. Some people are a little concerned about protein, since the wheat did not have any stress on it. Early next week they are forecasting triple digit temperatures, which may raise some concern about shriveled wheat."

--David Schemm, wheat producer, Sharon Springs, Kansas

June 14, 2010--"Overall the wheat in our area is looking good. Those farmers that didn't spray to control mustard have a problem. We also are seeing some fields around that have a bad case of downy brome. Stripe rust moved in about heading time and a lot of fields were sprayed with fungicide. Our Tam 111 held up well against the rust. Like other farmers found out this year, our Fuller lost its resistance to stripe rust and had to be sprayed with a fungicide. We also had to spray for stripe rust on our field of Bill Brown. The weather has been good for filling with mostly cool days and periodic rains. The wheat is just starting to get a little color. Depending on the weather, it looks like our harvest will start about the first of July."

--Mike Brown, wheat producer, Colby, Kansas

June 12, 2010--"Just a quick update without a lot to report. We finally got into the wheat fields Friday evening about 6 pm and cut a couple semi loads after testing all afternoon. Moisture was in the 14's and test weight 59-60, don't have a protein test as the Coop doesn't test every load. I was very surprised the ground carried us as well as it did after receiving 1.7 inches of rain on Wednesday, but we were on no-till and double cropped land. Hopefully we can get in a little longer day today but rain in predicted to move in late this afternoon."
